Twas the night before departure... (John Speaking)

Well...it is 10:30 PM EST and me and Ruth are getting ready to spend out last night in the USA for a while. We spent the day going to church, eating lunch with friends, and of course packing. As I type this in the kitchen I see our 200 pounds of belongings sitting against the wall and I think to myself, "finally, time to go!". It seems that me and Ruth have been preparing for this trip FOREVER and it will be nice to finally going. Still there will be many things we are going to miss. ..

1. Winter - I know this sounds crazy but we LOVE winter! We just built a 9 foot tall snowman last night in the front yard and now we are going to have to leave this winter wonderland from tropical Zambia (not a bad trade I suppose).

2. Friends and Family - It was great that we were able to spend so much time with family in both IL, WI, and PA. Still we will miss them just the same. We had a great going-away party in State College that just reminded us how much we will miss the community there. Great people just seem to find us!!!

Though we will miss these things we are very glad to have each other. I was just commenting to Ruth that I was glad that I did not have to say goodbye to her! We have both taken research trips away from each other (Ruth in South America and me in Antarctica) and we have decided to not do that anymore. No matter what the adventure ahead, we feel that we are in a good place to meet it. As always your prayers are welcome as we strive to adjust to our new surroundings. Our next post will be from Lusaka Zambia (if all goes according to plan). I hope this finds all who read it well. Know that we are thinking of you all.

  3. Hello everyone! This is John's mom, just wanting to let you know that John & Ruth have arrived safely in Lusaka, Zambia, but have had little time (and sparse internet access) to update their blog. Jim (John's dad) and I have spoken with both John and Ruth, and they are doing just great! Hopefully they will have an oppoutunity to update their blog before they head to Mansa on JAN 22nd. Until then, be assured that all is well with them!

  4. John and Ruth! I just took down my Christmas tree over the weekend only to discover a "hidden" ornament on the back of the tree. The ornament was comprised of: a plastic vespa scooter, a picture of Jerome Bettis, some large beads, and a note reminding me to remember life's little surprises... it really makes me miss you guys to think about this. I hope you guys are getting settled in Zambia. I've been praying that God fills your life with a good community there and that this experience helps strengthen your bond.

On a lighter note, Adrienne and I went rock climbing at the Y... she schooled my butt. I also told Jared that it was his responsibility to cut my hair now that John is gone... he said no way... so I plan on giving him hugs and touching him as much as possible so that he feels most uncomfortable :)

We had a great time at the PSCG spring kickoff party.. i bought a cheap toy helicopter and flew it in the auditorium there.. we also played user-generated taboo...I didnt know what we were doing and all I knew was that someone told me to write down random things on a slip of paper and place them in a bucket. So, my card had the following:
    Peter Pan
    diary products
    Captain Hook
    wool socks
    Kitt from Knight Rider

You both would have been a great asset to our team!

    Take care and God Bless!!!!!!!!!
